(Michel Chossudovsky is an award-winning author, Professor of Economics (emeritus) at the University of Ottawa, Founder and Director of the Centre for Research on Globalization (CRG), Montreal, Editor of Global Research. He has traveled in & studied China since the 1980s and provides many insights about China's history and especially the many changes during the past 50 years.
China's large pool of low cost labor, efficient factories & extensive supporting supply chains means that the US simply can't compete in most of these product categories, no matter what tariffs Trump applies. China is also moving up scale to many hi-tech products that don't depend on low cost labor, but on highly skilled engineers & scientists. This skilled labor pool is overcoming many previous advantages the US had & this won't be fixed by tariffs.
China has a long history of trade with other countries. Their silk road is now the Belt & Road initiative throughout the world, without a military presence in those countries. He points out that the US establishes military bases everywhere to help enforce their trade & political objectives.
The US really needs to take an honest inventory of our labor pool, their cost structures & identify which manufacturing segments can best be supported if we want to bring more manufacturing back to the US. Of course, another alternative would be to look forward & identify new opportunities where we can create an advantage. We should also take a close look at our education environment to better align with evolving needs, instead of the past.
Listen to this entire discussion with Michel Chossudovsky to better understand the complexities of the fast changing world we live in & why tariffs by themselves won't fix the US trade & financial issues. — RAD)
